We need to reach Maui homeowners, whether they live in the state of Hawaiʻi, on the US mainland, or elsewhere in the world!

Help displaced families by amplifying awareness for our message and this site.

• Share with family, friends, and colleagues in everyday conversations and on social media.

• If you know anyone with a large following who has ever experienced Maui or greater Hawaiʻi, ask them to help share our call for support.

• Connect with representatives and staff in Maui County or Hawaiʻi State Government. Ask them to look at this data and make informed decisions!

As of October 17th, we have over 500 families in need, representing over 1,600 individuals. Our aggregate data provides powerful insight into their housing needs,.

If you have storytelling skills, specifically in graphics, audio, and social media, we need your help to present our island’s real, human stories alongside our growing dataset.

We are just one effort pushing our government leaders, vacation homeowners, and the many people and organizations in between to care. We need our leaders to make better-informed decisions about our housing crisis.

Maui Rapid Response is staffing a housing team to handle the parts of the project that cannot be solved by technology.

This includes personally reaching out to parties across sectors. For example, we plan to reach more vacation unit owners, condo HOAs, and apartment complexes to ask them to support housing solutions to our families.

Efforts may also grow into helping families apply for rental assistance as more funding sources become available.

The site is run pro-bono and only costs about $300/month in services and cloud infrastructure. So we don’t need a lot of money to keep the site up.

But Maui Rapid Response and its Housing Team can use donations to fund a few people to work full-time on supporting Maui Hale Match and other closely related housing projects.

The back-end is written in Python with FastAPI and uses MongoDB. The front-end is written in Javascript with SvelteKit. Everything runs in AWS and infrastructure is managed with Troposphere and Cloudformation. There are always more features to add to the site.

Additionally, there is a wealth of housing-related data we can scrape from various sources (Maui County Property Tax records, for example) and present in real-time to share valuable insights.
